I am so there! I am so glad that I will be taking a break from school for 6 weeks. It would have killed me to miss this much anticipated and fun night! I think the cover means some kind of show down between the vampire (hence the red chess piece) and something... I am doing homework, so I will have to give it more thought.
I've already reserved my copy!
My prediction: Bella's current "mind powers" are going to make her more powerful than any other vampire. Once she's been bitten, there will be no contending with her - a force to be reckoned with, if you will. Hence, the white queen piece.
As for the red pawn... I can only think of Jacob. One pawn standing in her way. If you look at the placement of the pieces, the queen isn't in danger of being taken by the pawn, but the pawn is out of the way of the queen as it stands too. At an impasse.
Each move in chess is very calculated and well thought out. The queen is the best piece you could have in defense of the king. She can move in any direction, as far as she wants, and take out any other piece. Pawns are limited, one space at a time, but can make or break the game when used with skill.
On the other hand, the game would be over without the king. Where's he?
Poor little red pawn Jacob. Boo hoo. I feel for the helpless guy!!
So excited!!!
I definitely think (based on the cover) we're lookin' at a Volturi showdown of somekind. Chess is a game of strategy and is often used as a metaphor for war. I don't think SM would make ANOTHER showdown with werewolves, that's too predictable...
As far as the pieces go, I"m not sure who they represent, but I like Abi's idea of Bella/Jacob and being at an impass.
Pawns are interesting pieces in chess, because I think once they move to a certain point on the board, they can be used like queens. Like Abi said, if you use them wisely they can change the game.
Another idea I had was that maybe BOTH pieces represent Bella. The red pawn when she is still human and the white queen when she has changed. So, the cover could be almost the story of her journey in this upcoming book (assuming of course she is changed.)
oh yea, p.s. Jacob Black is not helpless....
I like that Vanessa! That both pieces represent Bella. I also like the idea of the Volturi showdown. It was mentioned in one of the other books (#2?) that they are like the royal family in that world. But now there's a new queen - being Bella because nobody has power over her. Very interesting.
My first thought was the Volturi, since they're like Vampire royalty. I've been pretty sure for awhile that the next book would be about a showdown between the Volturi and the Cullens. Maybe Bella is some kind of pawn in that showdown.
But then I remembered the story that the Quielite elders told about the "White Queen"???? Maybe that ties in there somewhere too.
I don't think there will be another conflict between the Cullens and the werewolves. And I don't think there will be anymore questions regarding the Jacob/Bella/Edward love triangle. She pretty much took care of that in the last book.
All I can say is...August 2nd doesn't seem soon enough for me!!
Who is the red pawn!! The pawn is at the last row, so it can be exchanged for a different piece, right? Is it an exchange for Bella like Vanessa said when she makes the change and becomes the "Queen", or a different exchange? I am wondering about the Volturi, and what kind of Chess game they wil be having with them. What type of exchange might be made to keep Bella and Edward from working for them? Oh the agony . . .
I love the white and red colors she uses for all of her covers!
Just to make sure everybody knows...we're all big fat nerds!
